Employees Linking Work, Social Media
By Wailin Wong |Tribune Newspapers June 11, 2009
Sun Microsystems exhorts its blogging employees, “Don’t tell secrets.”
IBM advises its workers, “Don’t pick fights, be the first to correct your own mistakes, and don’t alter previous posts without indicating that you have done so.”
And DePaul University says, “Don’t be a mole” by pretending to be someone else.
These guidelines are a sampling of how workplaces are crafting policies on employees’ use of social media platforms such as blogs and networking Web sites. The technology’s tendency to blur personal and professional lines, as well as its ability to quickly spread information or misinformation, has companies grappling with thorny issues that aren’t fully addressed in existing policies on e-mail and general Internet use.

Opposites Attract: Corporate Social Media Policy Guidelines
Molding aspects of a social media in a medium to large sized corporation can be tricky. Old fashioned corporate philosophy dictates control over the flow of communication be regulated by the proper in house channels only. In the evolution of social we see individuals representing company ideals and company brands when we use to see press releases and public relations broadcasting their spun version. The core of the company’s foundation ordinarily was concealed unless a controversy manifested and then public relations was brought in to fix it.
The Problem
It amusing to watch some companies evolve into the social sphere so eagerly and staff positions with no comprehension of goals, strategy, or acceptance. The evolution of social platforms and the infectious nature of how quickly information is transferred effects every department of the corporate environment.

About a year ago, I attended a global kick-off for a large project that I was helping to lead and it was a rare opportunity to meet colleagues from all over the US as well as the UK. I freaking LOVED it and it truly was like a reunion as we got to finally see the each other in person.
I mean, you always know it’s a real person on the phone or in IM, but being able to visualize them as you throw darts is much more gratifying.
Anytime you work in a large, global company, one of the biggest challenges is how to create an inclusive work environment where your employees feel like they are connected not only to the company itself, but with colleagues whom they will most likely never met face-to-face, yet work with on a daily basis.
